Steam boat captain Alexander Griggs founded Grand Forks, North Dakota in 1870 after his steam boat froze in the Red River and Griggs and his men were forced to spend the winter there. Griggs claimed a 9 acre piece of land which became the town site.

Grand Forks was incorporated on February 22, 1881.
