The interior of the statue was designed by Maurice Koechlin who worked for Gustaf Eiffel. It was sculpted by the French sculptor Frederic-Auguste Bartholdi. As I recall, it was given to us in 1869, assembled in France, then disassembled and marked, piece by piece, sent to America on a ship and then had to sit in storage and wait for while before it was finally reassembled.
