Operation Gold was a joint CIA/British Special Intelligence Service program to tap the Soviet military telephone system running through East Berlin. The CIA first built a warehouse in Rudow. They then dug a 450-meter-long tunnel into East Berlin and tapped the phones.

A double agent named George Blake let the Soviets know about the tunnel. They decided to run the operation as a deception--they passed confusing information on the phone system--so they wouldn't reveal Mr. Blake as a spy.

The tunnels were dug by British intelligence officers.
