Andrew Johnson was Abraham Lincoln's vice-presidential running mate in the 1864 presidential election. He succeeded Lincoln when Lincoln was assassinated in April of 1865.

Breckinridge, a Southern Pro-Slavery Democrat and John Bell, Constitutional Union Party. Lincoln defeated them all in November of 1860. The split within the Democratic Party led to the election of Abraham Lincoln to the US presidency.
