Let's start with a rhetorical question: Why did the American people elected George W. Bush as their leader?As many other countries, Mexico has a political system composed by the judiciary, the executive and a bi-cameral congress; Felipe Calderon was nominated by his political party (the Partido Accion Nacional or PAN) on the elections for president held on July of 2006.By a majority of votes counted on that day, he won and became president of Mexico. HOW he won is a debatable question: many think he stole the elections, but no certain proof has ever been found.

Yes. Just recently some states in Mexico elected new governors. Presidential elections will be held next year (2012).
Mexico has had 14 elections since 1920. Many did not consider it, however, to be a democracy until 2000 when a party other than the dominant PRI won it's first election.
