Why Is the bear flag significant to California?

Not many people know the true meaning of this symbol. The grizzly bear supposedly represents all of the bears in California and, by extension, California wildlife.

The grizzly bear on the California Flag is also said to be a symbol of strength, courage and independence.

At the time that the flag was designed the California grizzly bears - great beasts and fiercesome fighters - were already seen as 'typical' for California. The flag was designed to be used in the 1846 fight between American settlers and Mexican authorities, so naturally the designer looked around for something to symbolize the settlers' fighting spirit. The California Grizzly proved to be a natural candidate.

When California became a US State, this existing war flag was simply continued as the State's national flag.

In the early years of CA the California brown bear roamed the state. It was everywhere and there were so many that the Spanish would dig a pit and put a bear/bull in the pit to see who would win. Even as a child I remember camping where the bears roamed the camp grounds. John C. Fremont named CA the "Bear flag Republic" and in 1850 when CA became a state the bear was placed in the flag in honor of the Republic and the animal the roamed the state.

It's a Grizzly bear or brown bear.

Ironically, there are no known Grizzlies in CA.

It was modeled after the 'California Grizzly Bear' in captivity. The bear was named Monarch and was captured by a newsreporter.
