The North West Mounted Police have been replaced by the Royal Canadian Mounted Police. However, historically NWMP were responsible for keeping on top of theives, thugs, rustlers, murderers, claim jumpers and alcoholics who wanted to sell their liquor to the Native Americans that lived in the areas that the NWMP patrolled.
The NWMP were the forerunners of the RCMP, and were important as being the only keepers of the law in the Northwest Territory (which before 1905 included all of Alberta and Saskatchewan and earlier parts of Manitoba as well) in the wild and woolly days of the Canadian frontier

Calgary was originally named Fort Brisebois by NWMP officer Éphrem Brisebois. The NWMP took a dim view of officers naming locations eponymously and it was renamed Fort Calgary in 1876 by Colonel James Macleod. Brisebois did have a street named after him in the City's northwest. The name comes from Calgary on the Isle of Mull, Scotland. This somewhat fitting as the name comes from Norse words kald and gart meaning 'cold' and 'garden', which describes Calgary in the winter.
Well since the NWMP is Canadian and this is Canadian history we are talking about, CANADA HAS PRIME MINISTERS NOT PRESIDENTS!
