Actually they did, reasonably effectively, winning the First Italian-Ethiopian war in 1895-6. (Abyssinia = Ethiopian Empire)

But the rematch in the 1930's did not go so well. This time the support of the other European powers was much less and the Ethiopian army had not really kept pace with increasing technology. The Italians used Tanks, Aircraft, Machine-guns, Artillery, and finally Poison Gas. None of which the Ethiopians had in any numbers (around a dozen planes vs over 500) to crush the Ethiopian Army.

However after WW2 the Italians were forced to release Ethiopia again as an independent nation.
