Before the war's end, due to many successful operations in service of the Union, Farragut was promoted to the rank of Vice Admiral. This was said after one of his ships was sunk by a mine at the battle of Mobile Bay, Alabama, August 5, 1864. But, of course, he didn't actually say "darn."
