Many long time Mexican-American residents from the Taylor Street area were displaced by the urban renewal project of the construction of the Circle Campus branch for the University of Illinois during the early 1960s.

By the late 60s and early 70s the neighborhood had become a predominantly Mexican neighborhood. Many Mexican immigrants came to this neighborhood for the low rents, proximity to jobs, the ease of transportation. and the presence of other Mexicans.

Despite the gentrification, I think it has more of a Mexican presence now, than it did 40 years ago when it first became a predominantly Mexican neighborhood.
