Sandy was Sodapop's girlfriend (later ex-girlfriend) who he was sure he was going to marry. It broke his heart, when she left to go live with her grandmother in Florida because she got pregnant. Soda later runs off, saying he hates being in the middle, and it makes him feel more worse because she left him, and he loved her so much. She is mentioned once in the film, but Sodapop never says she moved or got pregnant.
She was pregnant. However, NOT by Soda. His caring loving nature made him want to marry her anyway and he was devastated when she left.
Why did she leave? Of course this is a matter of interpretation, but her parents sent her to live with an out of state relative due to her pregnancy, which was obviously 'out-of-wedlock' and was not socially acceptable at the time. Social attitudes have much changed over the last 40 years; thus making it easier on unwed mothers to not only have (publically) but keep their babies. It has not always been so, as is illustrated in this book (although between the lines).
Up until the mid 70's or so, if an young woman came up pregnant and unmarried, they typically were sent 'away' to have the baby. In this case she was sent to Florida to live with a relative. Many times they were sent to Unwed Mother's Homes until they delivered; leaving their baby behind and up for adoption.
In The Outsiders book it explains that Sandy was pregnate with someone elses kid. It wasn't Soda but he still wanted to marry marry her. So sad.....

Sandy leaves Sodapop because she is pregnant with another man's child and decides to move away to live with her grandmother in Florida. She doesn't tell Sodapop about the pregnancy because she knows he will want to marry her and take responsibility for the baby, but she doesn't want to trap him in a situation he's not ready for.

Sodapop's girlfriend, Sandy is pregnant with another man's child and moves to Florida to live with her grandmother. Like the other greaser girls, Sandy appears in the text only when the boys mention her.
The situation between Sodapop and Sandy implies an emotional complexity and unfulfilled desires in their relationship. While it is not explicitly stated, there are hints of miscommunication and differing expectations, suggesting that their love may not be as straightforward as it appears. This lack of clarity can lead to tension and heartache, ultimately impacting Sodapop's happiness. The unspoken nuances highlight the challenges young couples often face in navigating love and commitment.

The father is never specified, but it is NOT Soda's. Sandy cheated on him, and she was sent to live with her Grandparents because her parents were disappointed in their teenage daughter being pregnant. Although Soda said he would marry her, her parents wouldn't let her.
In "The Outsiders" by S.E. Hinton, the character who goes to Florida to live with her grandmother is Sandy. She is a girlfriend of Sodapop Curtis, one of the main characters in the story. Sandy moves to Florida after her parents decide they want her to live with her grandmother for reasons related to her behavior and choices. This decision ultimately affects her relationship with Sodapop.
