Spain came to believe that keeping Florida was impossible due to a combination of factors. Additionally, Spain's limited resources and competing priorities in other regions led to the decision to ultimately cede Florida to the United States in the Adams-Onís Treaty of 1819.

Florida was gained when President James Monroe asked Andrew Jackson to look into problems the Georgians had with the Seminole Indians. Instead of looking into it, Jackson invaded Florida and overthrew the Spanish government. Spain then agreed to sell Florida to the United States rather than fight. In 1819, the United States bought Florida for $5 Million.
