The villagers were the Goajiros. In 1499, on an expedition with Amerigo Vespucci, Alonso de Ojeda allegedly named the area "Venezuela" (little Venice). However, another etymology from the expedition suggests that there was a tribe coincidentally named the Veneciuela.
