disease destroyed the patatoe crop
It was in the 1840s, not 1940s- and the motive was hunger. A major food crop in Ireland was the potato. A plant disease killed the potato plants for 5 years. More than a million people starved, and another million left Ireland.
Approximately there are 3 million Irish passport holders. But there are still countless of Irish people that donÕt have a passport.
They suffered from hunger and other illnesses as a result of the famine in Ireland.
the poorest tenant farmers had become totally dependent on a single crop for survival - the potato in 1845 and for the next 5 years the crop failed almost completely due to potato blight leaving these people with no food, no money to buy food - there was still plenty being exported and a UK government which believed in non intervention
No. There are more people in the USA that claim Irish ancestry than the population of Ireland, but there are more actual Irish people in Ireland than there are actual Irish people in the USA.
The population dropped sharply due to death and emigration. More of the population moved towards the eastern side of the country. The majority of the population still lives on the east. The famine still features in Irish history as a major turning point for the country.
religious aspects (i have a worksheet for hw that has that ?)
It destroyed the Irish potato crops in 1845-1846, which led to a famine. More that 1 million Irish people died, and many others moved to the U.S. and other countries.
Many Irish and Germans immigrated to the US in the 1840s and 1850s because America was seen as a place with more opportunities, and better living conditions. The Irish and Germans were not happy with the conditions in their countries. They wanted a chance at a better life.
The moved because of religious aspects. Many were Roman Catholic.
The Famine - when Irelands potato crop failed on a national scale millions of people emigrated to escape, irreversibly changing the population now its only 4.5m or so whereas before the famine it was around 15m!!!
Most Irish people are Roman Catholic, but since the Reformation the growing number of Protestants have grew. In the 1100s the British took control of The Republic of Ireland. Since the 1600s most Irish peopel had become farmers on Britains land. The Irish had problems with each others religon. Most of Britan is Protestant, and the Irish are mostly Roman Catholic. In the 1840s millions of people from Ireland moved to the U.S, because of potatoe famine and Irelands poor economy. I would write more but I don't have much time I have a science project due. So ill try to write some more tomorrow may 9, 2008. If you still mneed the help.
