Why did the communists persecute the Russian orthodox church?

The Communists (in particular the Bolsheviks) persecuted the Russian Orthodox Church by making it illegal to belong to the Church, by imprisoning and killing the priests, bishops, monks and nuns, and by destroying many of the church buildings and monasteries, and confiscating church property.

Communism is a form of atheistic belief which also involved a romantic utopianism. It pretended to be on the side of the poor and oppressed and to invite them into a better world, but this was initiated by displacing anyone who has anything. Education, land wealth of any kind, culture and of course religious belief. In reality through the fear and terror imposed by its leaders, most active communists became unable to live harmoniously with others. Millions of all churches were persecuted simply because they held on to a belief that communist doctrine that there was no god was wrong. Communists actually feared christians because they knew in their hearts that they were wrong to do such violence to their fellow humans, and that they would be held accountable.
