The Confederacy ultimately surrendered due to a combination of military defeats, dwindling resources, and overwhelming Union advantages. Key battles, such as those at Gettysburg and Vicksburg, significantly weakened their forces. Additionally, economic hardships, loss of support from European powers, and growing Union morale contributed to their inability to sustain the war effort. By April 1865, the Confederacy faced inevitable defeat, leading General Robert E. Lee to surrender to General Ulysses S. Grant at Appomattox Court House.
The Confederacy attacked Ft. Sumter because they had all of the forts except that one, so first, they said they were going to give the union one hour to give it up or they will attck. The Union was nicest to NC so, the Confederacy could lose one of it's states or possibly see if NC could help make the Confederacy give up and let the Union win! At the end of the Civil War, the Union wins anyway!!! The Civil war lasted for six years (1860-1865). NC is still with the Confederacy after the Civil War is done with. The British had to give up their plans to grant recognition to the Confederacy and send military aid, for fear of looking pro-slavery.
The North was in fear that Great Britian was an ally of the Confederacy. The theory was that the Confederacy would exchange cotton for British military and naval supplies. There was even a document proposing that Jefferson Davis would give control of the Confederacy to the Queen of England and in exchange the Confederacy would be treated as a "Priveledged Colony". (Great Britian coincidentally had a cotton surplus the year that the Confederacy offered cotton for military and naval supplies.)
