In "By the Great Horn Spoon!" the town of San Francisco needed the cats primarily to control the burgeoning rat population that was threatening the food supply and hygiene in the midst of the Gold Rush. As the town rapidly grew, so did the number of rats, which posed a significant problem for the miners and residents. The introduction of cats helped to reduce the rat problem, allowing the community to thrive amidst the chaos of the Gold Rush era.
