Why did the zepeda leave Spain?

Is my belief that the Zepedas left Spain to flee the Moors. My grandfather was a Zepeda Montiel. He had blonde hair and blue eyes. The Zepedas were later associated with Germany. If you look at our coat of arms, it holds a French cross. I found a record about a person who translated plays from French to Spanish and vis versa during the 1200's. The name itself is Latin, not Spanish and the name goes back to before Spain was a country.
