Horses were the dominant means of transportation and work for most of the Ancient world... even to this day in many areas of the world. Horses were used extensively for military operations and agricultural work. Horses were used to quickly convey messages from one location to another; the Ancient Romans built way stations. These stations were full of horses. A messenger, carrying an important message, would arrive take a rested horse, and ride as hard and as fast as he could to the next way station, and trade his now exhausted horse for a fresh mount.
