Most people going to Adelaide would be there because they are on their way to somewhere else, or possibly for the football.
Not all Australians make fun of Adelaide. Those who do mock the city are people who lack understanding of classical culture. They are expecting vivid and exciting night life, but Adelaide is more "refined" than that. Adelaide is a cultural centre in the midst of Australia's driest state; an anomaly in a largely arid region.

One Direction's official website lists all the planned events / visits. So far, the future events list cover their plans of visit till 24th March 2013. As per the list, they have not planned any event / visit in Adelaide.
Australians do not like deserts any more than other people do. Many Australians recognise the uniqueness of the Australian deserts, while others never give them a thought. the vast majority of Australians do not live in the desert, but on or near the coast, where the major cities are.
