The Real Academia (Royal Academy) of Spain has declared Castilian Spanish as the the only "proper" Spanish, not the "Official" language.

Castilian refers to the region in which the official version of the Spanish language is spoken. All of Spain speaks Spanish, but with different accents and some slight difference in words or phrases. The same thing occurs with English within the British Isles and with English within the US.

Many English speakers feel that English as spoken by the English nobility is more proper than other versions. Try convincing Billy Bob in Alabama about that some time!

That declaration doesn't make it so. Languages are living, dynamic things. Who is to say what is proper and what is not? What makes these academics think they can impose their opinions on all the people around the world that speak the third most spoken language on the planet? What is proper is what gets the communicating job done between the people trying to communicate!

People from Castile feel quite free to correct other people in Spain who don't speak Castilian. What a bunch of nonsense!
