The name of Alaska was already introduced during the time of Russian rule (Аляска). It is derived from the Aluet alaxsxaq. Which means "the mainland" or more literally, "the object towards which the action of the sea is directed".

Alaska is also known as Alyeska or "the great land" and is derived from the same Aluet roots as Alaska.
