Holland has a St. Nicolas, which is called 'Sinterklaas' and visits Holland from Spain every year on December 5th and brings gifts for children, but also a man who drops by at Christmas, named 'Kerstman' (Christmas man). Sinterklaas is a more popular tradition in Holland. And even in the olden days "Sinterklaas" was celebrated in England and other countries, later this changed into Santa Claus. Also, "Sinterklaas" has different sweets/candy and a huge parade every year. And instead of hanging a sock, Dutch people "zetten hun schoen" (place their shoes) He is also called Santa Claus.

Christmas in the Netherlands is a religious holiday observed on the 25th and the 26th of December. Traditionally, there are no gifts exchanged, and santa Claus doesn't visit, although the last decades this is changing, and santa Claus has made an entrance in our culture, often to the displeasement of people who like to preserve the Dutch culture. The Dutch celebrate Sinterklaas (st. nicholas), on the 5th (and in some regions on the 6th) of December. This is the saint that also developed into Santa Claus (whom the Dutch call "kerstman", which translates as "Christmas man"). Santa Claus was adopted from the Dutch sinterklaas, and his the name santa Claus is the word sinterklaas, pronounced in an English manner. Sinterklaas comes on the fifth of December, not on a sleigh but a steamboat, from Spain, and he puts his gifts in children's shoes, placed by the fireplace.
