Like many things this nickname came from outside New York City. Jockeys and trainers in New Orleans wanted to race in the bigger races in NYC and they called it the big apple. Later in the 1920's jazz musicians also referred to NYC as the big apple but not until the early 1970's did New York use The Big Apple in a tourism campaign.
