Tension between the Tutsi and Hutu communities persists largely due to the historical legacy of colonialism, which exacerbated ethnic divisions and fueled competition for power. The 1994 Rwandan genocide, where Hutus systematically killed Tutsis, left deep scars and trauma that continue to affect relations. Additionally, political manipulation and social inequalities have perpetuated distrust and resentment. Ongoing struggles for political representation and economic resources further exacerbate these tensions, making reconciliation challenging.
The Hutus and the Tutsis.
Rwanda.
European influence had many horrible effects on Africa, including creating tension between the Rwandan groups known as the Tutsis and the Hutus. (Yes, that was actually what they were called.) When Belgium colonized Rwanda, they gave favor to the Tutsis. Once Belgians left, the Hutus started killing the Tutsis en masse in response. As well, once the countries that had conquered the area left, the governments were completely destroyed, and had to be restarted.
The Hutus
The conflict between the Tutsi and the Hutus was conducted mainly with machetes.
The conflict between Hutus and Tutsis in Rwanda has historical roots, stemming from colonial divisions that favored Tutsis over Hutus, leading to social and economic disparities. This tension escalated after Rwanda gained independence in 1962, resulting in violence and discrimination against Tutsis by Hutu-led governments. The situation culminated in the 1994 Rwandan Genocide, where extremist Hutu factions targeted Tutsis, leading to the deaths of an estimated 800,000 people in a span of just 100 days. This legacy of hatred and violence continues to affect the dynamics between the two groups today.
