Why have huskies stopped going to antarctica?

They were removed because there were fears that the seal population would shrink because the scientist's were killing the seals to feed to the huskies.When that was a rather bad idea because there is 30 million seals of just one species and the population of them are increasing and huskies were needed to pull sleighs.

In 1991 the Madrid Protocol on Environmental Protection to the Antarctic banned all introduced species (except people) from the Antarctic. This was to protect the fragile environment of the Antarctic.

Australia was an initiator of and one of 43 signatories to the 1991 Madrid Protocol, which, among other requirements, called for the removal of the husky dogs from Antarctica by 1994. The protocol was the result of an initiative led by the then Prime Minister of Australia, Bob Hawke, who opposed mining in Antarctica and sought stronger protection for the continent's environment.

Research showed that the huskies spread disease to the breeding animals.

There is no requirement for huskies to work on the Antarctic continent. As well, they can transmit disease to the animals that visit the beaches during breeding season, which is why they were banned.

Antarctic Treaty partners agreed to stop taking huskies to Antarctica in 1994. Particularly, from the British Antarctic Survey site:

"Annex II to the Environmental Protocol (Conservation of Antarctic Fauna and Flora) required that dogs were removed from Antarctica by April 1994."

The concern was that huskies could chase breeding animals on the beaches, and transfer dog diseases to the native animals breeding there.

Animals that are introduced into Antarctica can carry diseases that can be transmitted to the native animals that visit Antarctica's beaches to breed. In addition, dogs would naturally terrorize any sea bird or sea mammal in the wild.

Breeding animals use Antarctica for that purpose because there are no land predators. This is a balance that is best left intact.
