Why is Abraham Lincolns face on a pennie?

I think that his face is on the Penny because he fought for freedom and for civil rights. That is what I think that Abraham Lincoln face is on a Penny to show him that we care for him and for what he did for us.

Simply because copper (older bronze or modern plated) coins tarnish with time. They're bright copper when new.

No one was thinking of what color the coin would be when the decision was made to put Lincoln on the cent in honor of his centennial. President Theodore Roosevelt was a strong proponent of modernizing US coin designs, and the cent was a logical candidate because the existing Indian Head design had been in use for half a century plus the country was no longer a frontier society in many ways.
