First of all it's freezing cold!
Second, if they want to find different
fish that live in or near Antarctica
they would have to go underwater and
even with a wet suit its probably really cold
because the water is in really small numbers!
Meteorologists go to Antarctica to study the weather at a unique place on the Earth, the south pole, which influences the weather patterns of the entire planet.
The people who live there temporarily are scientists and those who work in support of science, based on Antarctica being the place for study of the health of planet earth.
Antarctica offers mankind a way -- through the Antarctic Treaty -- and place -- all of our world south of 60 degrees South Latitude -- to study the health of planet earth.
The various volcanoes in Antarctica itself and the islands surrounding it.
It depends on which facet you wish to study. There are specific studies such as arctic and antarctice marine biology Or the geology of antarctica.

Divers work for scientists interested in studying Antarctic waters in search of data to analyse -- about the health of planet earth. One danger is the saltwater temperature, which can fall as low as 27 degrees F before it freezes. This means that when fresh water is introduced into the saltwater, columns of fresh water can freeze instantly. This is a danger for divers who are concentrating and focusing on gathering data and are not aware of the freezing column until they are caught in it. Divers must enter the water through holes cut in the sea ice, and these holes can be awkward to be around, use and can snag diving equipment. Sea ice can be as thick as eight feet, or as thin as a few feet in order to support the top-of-ice activity to support the divers. Divers can become dis-oriented under the sea ice, so that they are unable to find the re-surface hole. Usually, divers work with dive tenders. These volunteers man the dive flags that divers look for to find holes in the sea ice, and man the air hoses, if used, so that divers can accomplish their work underwater.
Antarctica's number one resource is raw data related to the health of planet earth. This is what scientists study when they develop projects funded by their governments and study in Antarctica.

Scientists working in Antarctica study the health of planet earth.
Antarctica is a major center for scientific study of the health of planet earth.
Governments sponsor scientific study in Antarctica, and that is the only activity allowed in Antarctica under the Antarctic Treaty.
