During the Spanish American War the Cubans were in the middle of a war for Independence that wasn't going well. When the Spanish American war broke out the Cubans agreed to help the united states if they were guaranteed Independence after the war the United States. The United States also got some valuable trade advantages and strategically located naval bases in return.

The other contributing factor was that the USA didn't want to be a conquering imperialist power like the Europeans and it wouldn't be fun to have to fight the Cuban guerrilla army that the Spanish had failed to defeat for nearly 10 years.
