Falmouth was most famous in the age of sail as it was a major port with a huge natural anchorage where ships could shelter and provision. Its location at the tip of Cornwall with easy access to the Western Approaches and the Altantic also made it the ideal place for mail ships to operate from. Mail could be landed and couriered quickly to/from London and elsewhere overland without waiting for the ship to beat its way up the channel to more northerly ports. These ship (the Falmouth Packets) operated a worldwide mail service and became famous.

In Victorian days it became a resort town, where it has prety much stayed since.

It also boasts the best pasty shops in the world
