Montgomery became the capital of the Great State of Alabama on 01/26/1846. It was also the first capital of the Confederates States of America when that government was first organized in February of 1861. It was later moved to Richmond, VA. The capitol building itself is located on a hilltop called "Goat Hill". Today it is the fourth largest metropolitan area in Alabama.
