Importance, as it regards to a city, is relative. But in this case, I believe you're referring to it's historic and cultural significance.

Savannah is one of the very few Southern cities that was built in the colonial era and was not destroyed in the Civil War. After Sherman's march through Atlanta, he took his army North towered Savannah. As he entered the city, he found it to be very beautiful and could not bear to destroy it. This preserved all of the great architecture the now makes Savannah famous.

With the vast amount of cultural history in Savannah, coupled with their excessively large St. Patricks's day celebration, Savannah is commonly felt to be important.
