It's probably a lot to do with climate. The general rule for the winter is, the further east the colder it gets, as there is less influence from a warm sea. Temperatures in some parts of the Siberia and Far East regions can drop to -60C in winter! Also Russia is culturally European and thought of as being a European nation, even though 75% of its landmass is in Asia.
