Essentially, it's because the name stuck. The stroke (with a breaststroke kick) was initially developed in Britain from Native American swimming styles by John Trudgen (and called the Trudgen stroke), and improved upon by Australian swimmer Dick Cavill, who had had contact with a swimmer from the Solomon Islands. Later modifications to the leg kick beat led to the stroke being called the American Crawl although this name didn't stick. All variations are known as "front crawls" and are the fastest of the swimming strokes, and are the only strokes not regulated by FINA ("freestyle" means that swimmers can swim any stroke they like, the front crawls happen to be the fastest strokes so are universally swum).
