There are several factors that caused the relations as we see them today:
-The city of Sevestopol, where the Russian Black sea Fleet is stationed has caused disagreements and tensions.
-Ukraine supplied weapons to Georgia, which were used in last years South Ossetian war. For example - the shooting down of Russian aircraft using air defence systems provided to Georgia by Ukraine has caused alot of tensions between Russia and Ukraine.
-Gas disputes are another cause of tensions between the two countries.
There are many including such countries as Finland. The most popular one in current events though is Ukraine, as Russia and Ukraine have had a strained relationship for quite a while.
As of October 2023, the U.S. government's approach to Russia is complex, largely influenced by ongoing geopolitical tensions, particularly concerning Ukraine and cyber activities. While there have been occasional diplomatic efforts to address specific issues, such as arms control and regional security, overall relations remain strained. The U.S. continues to prioritize sanctions and support for Ukraine, indicating that a full restoration of relations is unlikely in the near term. Any future engagement would depend on significant changes in Russia's policies and actions.

Additionally, North Korea has historically had strained relations with Australia, particularly regarding nuclear proliferation and regional security concerns. While not as antagonistic, relations with Russia have also been tense in light of geopolitical conflicts and Australia's support for Ukraine.

Russia's status as an ally is complex and varies depending on the context. In some situations, Russia has cooperated with other nations on issues like counterterrorism or arms control, but it has also been involved in conflicts and geopolitical tensions, particularly with Western countries. Current relations are strained due to issues such as the Ukraine conflict, sanctions, and differing political ideologies, making it difficult to categorize Russia as a consistent ally. Ultimately, Russia's alignment can shift based on national interests and global dynamics.
