The river Mersey is quite shallow here and several roads converged at this popular crossing place so people could Ford the river (cross the river). A small trading post was set up on what is now Castle yard, which was previously known as castle hill. This trading post was thought to have been fortified by the Romans into a STOCKade. The two words STOCK FORD named the area which were later joined and slightly changed into Stockport.
