Tama umaga's brother Mike encouraged him to play Rugby Union. They both played Rugby League but Mike switched to Rugby and was selected to play for Manu Samoa, the Samoan representative side, at the Rugby World Cup. Mike persuaded Tana to switch to Union as well and, as they say, the rest is history.
