The earliest Greek philosopher and mathematician found that it appeared to be possible to discover things about the natural world by first noticing what is self-evident and then using deduction. This view influenced philosophers from Plato on, including Euclid. Bertrand Russell says (History of Western Philosophy) that when the Declaration of Independence says, "We hold these truths to be self-evident," it is modelled on Euclid.
