The butterfly jasmine is endemic to Cuba, so it doesn't grow anywhere else in the world. Besides that, during the wars of independence, women put the flowers in their hair, and used them to carry secret messages from the rebel troops. They rolled the tiny pieces of paper and pinned them into the hollow space at the centre of the flower to enable communication between the rebels in hiding. Since then, the flower has become a symbol of the strenght and courage of the Cuban women.
