Why is the holy land important to Christians and Muslims?

Well, it has some nostalgic and symbolic significance as the place where it all happened.

But Christianity does not take place in Palestine. Christianity is about the relationship between a Christian and God, and God is everywhere, and anywhere. There is no place that is more Christian than any other place.

And Christianity is also about the relationship between a Christian and the church (people, not the building), and the church is usually all around the neighborhood.

And Christianity is about the relationship between a Christian and his/her morality and spirituality, and that's inside you all the time.

If Palestine were to disappear tomorrow, Christianity would not change at all.

Israel is important to Chrisitanity b/c of the path that Jesus took to his crucifixtion called- the Via Dolorosa. It also has to do with the churches built long ago. But not the Holy Land because that is Palestine.

It is also written those who bless Israel are blessed and those that curse Israel are cursed.

Christian's also have Abraham as their father. We were grafted in by the faith in the Lord Jesus Christ.

The holy land is important to God, even to this day and forever. Even though the Holy Spirit now infills those that believe and they are the true temple of the Holy Spirit. ( 1 Corinthians 6:19-20 )

The Crusades where fought between the Christians of medieval Europe and the Islamic people of the middle-east. At the time of the Crusades, the Muslims had control of the Holy Lands (middle-eastern countries like Jerusalem). These lands where sacred to Christians because they were where Jesus lived, taught, and was crucified, but they were also sacred to Muslims because they were where Muhammad lived, taught, and died, so the crusades were an ongoing battle for control of these lands.

The reason for the crusades was a war between Christians and Moslems which centered around the city of Jerusalem. The City of Jerusalem held a Holy significance to the Christian religion. The Church of the Holy Sepulchre in Jerusalem commemorated the hill of crucifixion and the tomb of Christ's burial and was visited by Pilgrims. In 1065 Jerusalem was taken by the Turks and 3000 Christians were massacred starting a chain of events which contributed to the cause of the crusades.

Not only then, but this small area will be eternally important since it is important to God. Conflit continues to this day.

The catholic church, due to the decline of Byzantium, and the rise of Venice trading, wanted a piece of the lucrative silk trade in the Middle East. The pope told Europeans who were not able to read The Bible for themselves in the vein of "Simon says" told christendom that were people to crusade they would receive extra God points and more forgiveness.

So, two reasons: economic, and spiritual. Neither of which were biblical, but then the catholic church by nature isn't.
