The harsh climate and environment of the ice lands make them difficult to live in. The snow and ice which remains for most, if not all of, the year makes it difficult to grow crops and raise animals for food and other resources. In addition, many other normal activities of towns are harder than usual to accomplish: travel and transportation are more complicated, even dangerous, buildings are increasingly difficult to construct, and even daily life can be made miserable by harsh winds, snow and ice. The ice land areas can also be gray and gloomy, an aspect which does not appeal to many people. Few things grow well in these areas; habitation is reserved for only the most robust and hardy plants and animals; and humans are no exception to this general rule. Still, for those few hardcore souls, who enjoy and embrace the weather and surroundings, living in the icelands can be a thoroughly rewarding experience, and they will gladly stand up for their chilly homes! :)

Sparsely populated simply means that there aren't very many people living there. Usually this is because the climate (desert, polar region) or the terrain (mountaintop, swamp) makes it difficult to support a large population.-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------Sparsely populated means very few human inhabitants when compared to the land area in which they are living.New York would therefore be densely populated as compared to Greenland which is sparsely populated.
