Many people are poorly educated in this region, and almost without exception, state governments here spend comparatively little on education. Also, most people accept the wealth inequalities here in the South, which are the most pronounced in the US. Another reason is that employment here in the South is often poorly compensated [i.e. without benefits], in addition to the right to work [for less] policies of virtually all the state governments here. Lastly, there is the effects of racism still.
