Republicans and Democrats. Republicans are generally percieved as more conservative, while democrats are more liberal. They often represent 2 different views on political issues, and rarely agree. The animal symbol for the Democrats is the donkey and for the Republicans is the elephant.
These meeting are called political conventions. Nowadays, primary elections are more important than the conventions for choosing candidates.

I think I am answering the question I posed... I can see that one might get a plethora of answers based on one's political bias etc. but surely there must be a fairly straight answer to the question - does Scotland contribute more to UK financially speaking than it gets back?

Jude Law is British, so he's unlikely to be either a democrat or a republican as in Britain they have a different political system... the main partys in the UK are conservative (equivalent to republican), labour (equivalent to the demotrats) However the major partys in the UK tend less towards the far right than their American counter-parts, so i suppose it's more likely Jude Law would be sympathetic towards democratic views =)

Essentially, yes. Australia is a democracy, meaning that the people do elect their representatives. However, the candidates for the position of Prime Minister are selected by the political party each one represents, and Australians tend to cast their vote for the party, more so than for the political leader.
I don't have the numbers, but I believe the %age is higher in Scotland.
