The biblical account, written centuries later, tells is that Omri was just one king in a long line of kings over Israel. However, recent historical evidence suggests that Omri may actually have been the first king of Israel (the northern kingdom). When the Assyrians called Israel 'the land of Omri', they would have been reflecting the view of the Israelites, who at that time believed their monarchy to have begun with Omri.
