The State of Rhode Island says that it was originally Roodt Eylandt, Dutch for Red Island and that it was Anglicized when the English took over from the Dutch. There is also some thought that one of the early Dutch explorers looked at a small nearby island and said that it was 'about the size of the Island of Rhodes' a famous port in the Mediterranean.

Some contend that it has something to do with the Agean Sea. The name Rhode Island probably has Dutch origins when it was called Roodt Eylandt or Red Island by the Dutch West India Company.

Verrazano compared the nearby Block Island in size to the Island of Rhodes in Greece (which everyone knew). The locals got confused and thought Verrazano was referring to what is now Rhode Island and named it as such.

The other and more likely hypothesis is that it comes From the Durtch West India Company name which was 'Roodt Eylandt'meaning red island.
It is thought it was named after Rhodes, a Greek island
