The State of Rhode Island says that it was originally Roodt Eylandt, Dutch for Red Island and that it was Anglicized when the English took over from the Dutch. Verrazano compared the nearby Block Island in size to the Island of Rhodes in Greece (which everyone knew). The locals got confused and thought Verrazano was referring to what is now Rhode Island and named it as such.
