Constantinople was the Hellenistic city of Byzantium which was redeveloped into the imperial capital of the eastern part of the Roman empire (Milan had become the capital of the western part). This is what made it important. After the fall of the western part of the Roman Empire, Constantinople became the only capital of the empire. Constantinople was also in a good trading location, on the isthmus which connects the Mediterranean and the Black seas and which is the border between Europe and Asia.
