The Belgian colonial operation in the Congo was among the most brutal forms of colonial oppression in the world. Congolese were forced by the tens of thousands into slavery and were punished for disobedience to Belgian dictates by having their limbs hacked off. It was cruel and vindictive and engendered much hatred among the Congolese. This resulted in numerous uprisings against the Belgian authority, most with minimal success and massive retribution, which only served to inspire more to rebel.
