Why was the Catholic religion strong in Spain?

Spain was a Roman Province when the Roman Emperor Constantine stopped the persecution of christians and became a christian himself. By that time almost 1/3 of the empire was christian already. Spain just remained a christian, and later a Roman Catholic, nation. The cathoic ( which means united ) church did not become the Catholic church until it had to distinguish it self from the protestant reformation.

Catholicism was established in Spain while it was still part of the Roman Empire. As Rome fell, Spain was invaded by the Visigoths, and eventually taken over by the Muslims. King Ferdinand and Queen Isabella became King and Queen of their respective kingdoms in 1479 and 1474 respectively. They enforced a strong Catholic Faith with the aid of the Spanish Inquisition, the primary purpose of which was to uncover "fake" Christians, many who had been forcably converted from Judiasm and Islam who were supposedly using Christianity as a cover to subvert the repressive Catholic government of Spain. When the crown finally regained Spain, those great Catholic monarchs, Ferdinand and Isabella started the Spanish Inquisition to root out any subversive elements in their country. Jews were not affected, only Catholics and those posing as Catholics fell under their purview. The protestant revolt was underway at the same time in the northern countries, and it is one of the things that the crown managed to keep out of Spain. Those who were using their Catholicism as a cover to undermine the country were tried as traitors. At that time in history (as evidenced by King Henry VIII, and Queen Elizabeth I in England) NOT being the religion of the Crown was considered subversive. In England, Elizabeth tortured and killed many Catholics as she considered this treason. In the same way, Ferdinand and Isabella viewed protestants, and for the same reasons. I'm not so sure that it is still that strong in the 21st century.

When Spain conquered places, like in South America and Central America, they brought Catholic priests with them. Any good Catholic knows that his first duty is to evangelize, and the Spanish Catholics have always been good Catholics. Plus, of course, they had a little help from the Mother of God, who appeared in Mexico in 1531 and asked for a Church to be built there. She, personally, converted the Mexicans in droves.
