It was controversial because the new Republican Party (of which Lincoln was the first President) was generally favourable to Northern interests.
The effect was that South Carolina immediately seceded from the Union, followed by the other Southern states.
It triggered the secession of several southern states, starting with South Carolina.
Slavery was the major issue in the 1860 election. The Republican Party platform promised not to interfere with slavery in the states, but opposed the further extension of slavery into the territories. Republican Party candidate Abraham Lincoln won the 1860 presidential election defeating John Breckinridge, John Bell and Stephen Douglas. Abraham Lincoln received 180 electoral votes from 18 of the 33 states. Abraham Lincoln did not receive electoral votes from any southern state. Lincoln was not on the ballot in Alabama, Arkansas, Florida, Georgia, Louisiana, Mississippi, North Carolina, South Carolina, Tennessee and Texas.
It Started,The War Between The States.
Abraham Lincoln's election affected the entire nation. For one, Northerners and abolitionists now had a strong central supporter in Washington. At the same time, however, Southerners felt their rights and freedoms would be taken away by Lincoln and the federal government. This is what lead to the attack on Fort Sumter, secession, and ultimately the war between the states.
Abraham Lincoln
It helped the Union win
The Emancipation Proclamation was signed into effect on January 1, 1863.
he was sympathetic to the Confederacy and wanted Lincoln dead.
The Northern Democratic Party was the effect of the splitting of the Democratic Party. As the North kept opposing slavery, the south got aggravated Then, the Democratic party split into the Northern and Southern Democratic Party. In the election of 1860, there were two democrats who ran. One from the south, and one from the north. Because of the Democratic party splitting, the election was won by Republican Abraham Lincoln. If the party had not split, we wouldn't have had Abraham Lincoln as our 16th president.
It didnt, that was when Abraham Lincoln was assassinated by someone who thought that if he killed Abraham he would be be helping the south, but it actually had the opposite effect! :)
It was a consspiracy because others knew of the plan before it was put into effect.
Lincoln signed the Emancipation Proclamation in 1862 but it took effect on January 1, 1863.
