Why was the pyramids so important in Egyptian society?

Because it represented the greatness of the pharaoh and it is still important as it is the last of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World and it is part of not just Egypt's heritage but of the world's heritage.

The Great Pyramid was for a tomb for pharoah Khufu, or Cheops, one was for Khufu's son and the other for another Pharaoh. The word Pyramid derives from a Greek word, Pyramis, which means wheat cake as the structures reminded the Greeks of a pointy topped wheat cake. The Egyptians called the structures "Mer". The shape represented the suns rays and the sun was the god "Ra". The sides were sloped so the Pharoah could climb to heaven and live forever. The significance for the modern world is simply history. as an addendum, the pyramid represented the very first land to appear.

One theory is that they were designed as a type of "resurrection machine."[6] The Egyptians believed the dark area of the night sky around which the stars appear to revolve was the physical gateway into the heavens. One of the narrow shafts that extends from the main burial chamber through the entire body of the Great Pyramid points directly towards the center of this part of the sky. This suggests the pyramid may have been designed to serve as a means to magically launch the deceased pharaoh's soul directly into the abode of the gods. All Egyptian pyramids were built on the west bank of the Nile, which as the site of the setting sun was associated with the realm of the dead in Egyptian mythology.[7]
